Jewels Or Thorns

This poem is from way back when I first started writing, and it was one of my first introductions to the Right Reverend Jake. He showed up one day full of the righteousness, that has endeared him to the many, (or the few) depending on whom you ask. And although he preaches on a lot of subjects, does the Reverend Jake, it is on the frailties of humankind that he expresses himself the best most, and how introspect can assist us in our travels on this, the course that is life. He tells me often that mistakes are part of the journey, and that we all make them, (though he seldom seems to relate any of his own) and that it is okay to forgive oneself, (and others) for them. But, he says, never forget your mistakes as they are your sextant, your compass and your chart on this, your worldly voyage.

Then he said something about a Sunset Single’s Cruise sailing out of Santa Monica and left he me with these thoughts.

Enjoy a Sunday of peace and love everyone,

Between sinners and saints,

and winners and ain’ts,

sometimes there’s a very fine line.

But, when it’s all boiled down,

jewels or thorns, in your crown,

the options, they’re yours and they’re mine.

Now, life seldom seems fair,

when it looks like your share,

is much smaller, than the fellow, next door.

Eden’s apple is sweet,

but, when it falls at your feet,

the rot, it begins, at the core.

So, if you can choose,

to win, or to lose,

consider the stakes of the game.

Will the rewards, that you reap,

help you to sleep,

or to lie, awake, with the shame?
