Another reposting of a poem from a year and a half ago. My sister was part of a committee formed to organize their class reunion in 2010. One of the other organizers is a close personal friend of our family and we were discussing the people who were expected to attend and then the conversation turned to those could not, due to untimely passings. I was asked if I thought I could come up with something to commemorate that fact. The following poem was the result of that effort. It was said to be very well-received. They had it printed and displayed on an easel at the entrance to the hall along with the names of the departed classmates.
Please read and remember,
When memories, with time, do fade,
then gentle reminders, need be made.
That what is now,
has not always been.
Come, let’s remember,
our lost friends.
Remember, when they walked the halls,
and by their nicknames, they were called.
and their smiles,
and for some,
their funky styles.
Remember, the studious,
the clown, the jock.
The spirit free, not bound by clock.
But, whichever class,
you see them in,
they were classmates, and our friends.
May They Rest In Peace.
