Honors (class reunion)

Another reposting of a poem from a year and a half ago. My sister was part of a committee formed to organize their class reunion in 2010. One of the other organizers is a close personal friend of our family and we were discussing the people who were expected to attend and then the conversation turned to those could not, due to untimely passings. I was asked if I thought I could come up with something to commemorate that fact. The following poem was the result of that effort. It was said to be very well-received. They had it printed and displayed on an easel at the entrance to the hall along with the names of the departed classmates.

     Please read and remember,

Jake.

HONORS

[class reunion]

When memories, with time, do fade,

then gentle reminders, need be made.

That what is now,

has not always been.

Come, let’s remember,

our lost friends.

~*~

Remember, when they walked the halls,

and by their nicknames, they were called.

Their demeanors,

and their smiles,

and for some,

their funky styles.

~*~

 Remember, the studious,

the clown, the jock.

The spirit free, not bound by clock.

But, whichever class,

you see them in,

they were classmates, and our friends.

~*~

 May They Rest In Peace.

Now Spring has arrived and now I must decide, which clothes that I can still wear. But I haven't lost any weight so I guess it's my fate to rummage through my closet and swear.

Lovely poem and your quote is SO apt! Thank you Jake! And thanks so much for your help with the email problem. All seems sorted now!

    • Great Denise, it worked for me too. It was so frustrating, to see all that e-mail and then find out none of it was for me…lol. Thanks for the touching sentiments as well.. Glad we didn’t lose you from the blog-o-sphere..

  3. My Pi Kappa Alpha frat brothers and frat sisters usually meet every two years at Florida Southern College in Lakeland. Classes from 1965 to 1974. Usually about 60 strong. Some have joined the Chapter Eternal. Why do the men look so old and the gals not so pretty anymore ? Except for gaining 50 pounds I have not changed at all.

    • Oh, so that gray/white beard is from your college days as well? In any case “You look Mahvelous, darling, you really do” Thank you Billy Crystal(but I forget the character) lol Thanks for the comment though.
