A Dog’s Life

Please allow me to introduce you to Melody, she is a rescued dog from Tennessee. She is amazingly loveable, so smart, and she is my “grandogga” and she loves me to a point of distraction at times. I do however, take a back seat to my wife when there is food around. I did say she was smart, didn’t I?  My daughter and son-in-law chose very well and then spoiled the you-know-what out of her, as witnessed by the Christmas gifts displayed. Okay, so some of them came from my wife and I, as well as from a  friend, but she is certainly well-loved and doted on by us all..

In her honor I am reposting this poem, which coincidently, has been my most well-received piece. I am hoping for another good reception this time as well..

Please read and respond if you would like,

 If I were a dog,

what kind be I?

a Greyhound, a terrier,

Jack Russell, or Skye?

A setter or spaniel,

Poodle or Pug,

big mean and ugly,

or cute as a bug?

 Bulldog or Boxer,

giant or mini?

A mutt off the street,

or one, costing a penny?

Long hair or short,

tail curly or straight,

or barely a stump,

would that be my fate?

 Would I be a barker,

a howler, or worse?

a growler and biter,

that people would curse?

Would I live in a house,

or out on the street,

scrapping and scrounging,

for a morsel to eat?

Would I be a work dog,

or sit on a lap?

Would I go inside,

or outside, to nap?

Would I have ticks,

and would I have fleas?

But, I’d like to have toys,

that squeak, when they’re squeezed.

 A Beagle or Bassett,

or maybe a Schnauzer?

I suppose it won’t matter

 what kind of a bowser.

As long as there’s someone,

who’ll pat and who’ll rub,

then I will care not,

if my tail, is a stump!

Melody is adorable!!! No wonder you guys love her so much!! I remember this poem and loved it this time just as much. Thanks for reposting!!!

    • Thanks Beth Ann, yep, she’s a keeper alright..Thanks for the like, and for your encouragement as well. She doesn’t always play well with other dogs though..it’s funny if they are brought to her house then she at least tolerates them, but outside or at the vets she is less than well-behaved at times. We think it may be the atmosphere she came from, where they have to ‘fight’ pretty much for everything. It is so sad, I know you’ve seen those commercials too.

      • Beth Ann says:

Oh yes–those Sarah McLaughlin commercials that I have to leave the room or else I dissolve into tears??? YES! I am sure she will get rehabilitated over time!!!

  2. Over the last 40 years I have kept the greyhounds well fed.
