The Seed Of Avarice

I came across this one the other day, and I had forgotten about it. I hope you will enjoy it.

I think another “New Year’s” resolution is in order… Cut down on the long explanations and thoughts behind these poems. KISS, “keep it simple stupid.”

Jake.

THE SEED OF AVARICE

 Of all the deadly sins,

the worst is greed.

Always wanting more,

than what you need,

and hatred, the bitter fruit,

of it’s seed.

Give me, give me, give me,

is it’s creed.

*

 Avarice will lead you,

down a road.

And loneliness, will be,

your heavy load.

For family and friendships,

will erode.

Give me, give me, give me,

is it’s code.

*

No, you’ll never have it all,

though you may try.

Yes, you can own the land,

but you cannot, own the sky.

And happiness, as well,

you cannot buy.

Give me, give me, give me,

is your cry.

*

You cannot, take it with you,

when you’re gone.

But the seed, you planted here,

will grow on.

And someone, may even want,

what you have on.

Yes, give me, give me, give me,

you’ll have spawned.

*

 Oh, avarice is the seed,

that you have spawned.

And give me, give me, give me,

will go on.

Yes, give me, give me, give me,

will go on.

Oh, the seed of avarice,

grows on and on.

WE HAVE TO HOPE THAT THE NEXT GENERATION WILL NOT BE AS GREEDY AS SOME OF THIS GENERATION…. BUT OF COURSE I DON’T MEAN YOU OR I………….

    • I don’t think so Sal, that is why it is called the ‘seed’ of avarice, greed begets greed, I’m afraid. Humans have always been hoarders, whatwe place the greatestvalueon, iswhat wehoard. Thank you for reading and commenting.

It is a weed that chokes out the good things. We need to plant lots of generosity instead.

  3. This poem really touched me. It’s about something so true, but something we never usually think of, but we should. It was well said. Thank you for this.

    • Just between you and I, back when I wrote this poem, we were dealing with a death in the family. Then we found just how quickly greed shows it’s ugly head.
Hmm, “Greed Comes To The Funeral” ah, perhaps another poem in the making. Thank you so much for your comment, I am very pleased that you found it so touching. And you shared those feelings with me.

    • Thank you for your comment.. If you liked this poem you will like “My Worldly Goods” to be published soon.. It is about greed’s ugly face at the time of someone’s passing. Also after reading your current post I would suggest you seek out the Ry Cooder song “No Banker Left Behind” I’m rather sure you will like it.
