God Save the Poor Man

As, with a lot of what I write, the origin comes from out of the blue. With no apparent reason or inspiration, it usually starts with a phrase or a thought and evolves from there. I have even written a poem about suicide, of all things, (non-biographical of course), that I have not yet published. Desperation, loneliness, hopelessness, are powerful emotions, that people face everyday. This is a poem of a man on the edge.

There, but for the Grace of God, go us all.

Jack.

God Save the Poor Man

                                                               God save the poor man,

with the mortgage due.

Young ones cryin’ all around,

and his wife, be cryin’ too!

Yes, God save the poor man,

save him from the trial,

of this life, he’s livin’,

if only for a while.

God save the poor man,

from the poor man’s sins.

Drinkin’, drugs, and gamblin’,

please stop, the spiral’s spin.

God save the poor man,

from his own device,

for the hardship of his livin’,

starts with, the easy vice.

God save the poor man,

when his family, needs to eat.

And the bank’s foreclosed the mortgage,

and they’re livin’, on the street.

God save the poor man,

now let him see the light.

Lead him from, those wayward ways.

Though, it may take, all God’s might.

So, please God, save the poor man,

save him, from the trial,

of this life he’s livin’,

if only, for a while.

Oh, please God, save this poor man.

Save me, from my trials,

of this life, I’m livin’.

If only for a while.
